Background

Penistone East is a three-member ward of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. It covers Penistone and nearby communities in western Barnsley, close to the Peak District boundary. The May 2026 register contained 8,662 electors.

Fourteen candidates contested all three seats in May 2026. Labour's Alex Burnett and Frances Nixon were elected alongside Reform UK's Kay Hughes. Because each voter could support up to three candidates, those totals do not supply a like-for-like vote-share baseline for a later single-seat poll.

The August 2026 by-election filled one vacancy. Labour won with 1,728 votes, or 51.8%, against Reform UK's 795, or 23.8%, giving Labour all three ward seats. No conventional share change was calculated against May because the election formats differed.
