Drones: Industry & DefenceBackground
Latgale occupies eastern Latvia along the borders with Russia and Belarus. Its frontier position gives the region continuing relevance in Latvia's security planning, particularly as the Baltic states strengthen their eastern defences.
The region also carries an economic role distinct from Latvia's larger western centres. Latgale has long sought investment and industrial work. The planned Latvia-Ukraine drone factory, announced on 30 June, places that regional development question beside defence production and cross-border security.
That combination matters beyond one proposed site. Latgale provides a place where Latvian economic policy, Ukrainian defence-industrial co-operation and NATO's eastern-border concerns meet.
Latgale hosts Baltic drone production
Latgale entered Latvia and Ukraine's drone-industrial plans on 30 June, when both countries selected the eastern Latvian region for a joint factory. The proposed site gives the region a direct role in producing equipment for a security partnership shaped by Russia's war against Ukraine.
For Latgale, the proposal joins regional development to frontier security. The June announcement described the factory as support for Latvia's poorest area, while its position beside Russia and Belarus makes the location central to the political meaning of the project. Ukraine's transfer of drone know-how would place production in a second Baltic state after Lithuania.
