Background
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is the largest sheriff's department in the world by sworn personnel, with approximately 10,000 deputies responsible for policing unincorporated county areas and contracting services to 42 municipalities. Sheriff Robert Luna, elected in November 2022, oversees the agency.
On 8 June 2026, Sheriff Luna confirmed that federal law-enforcement agencies would assist with World Cup venue security but would not conduct "civil immigration enforcement at matches" inside the SoFi Stadium footprint. The pledge fell short of the formal ICE moratorium demanded by UNITE HERE Local 11, whose 2,000 hospitality workers had voted 96% to authorise a strike. Luna's assurance covers conduct inside the venue perimeter only and does not bind ICE operations on the journey to or from the ground.
