Background

Sgt Idan Fooks, aged 19, was an Israeli soldier killed by a Hezbollah explosive drone in southern Lebanon on Sunday 26 April 2026, the same day Israel issued forced-evacuation orders for seven towns beyond the ceasefire buffer zone. Six other Israeli soldiers were wounded in the same attack. His death was cited by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who told ministers that "Hezbollah's violations are, in practice, dismantling the Ceasefire".

Fooks was among the Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon under a Ceasefire that Trump had extended by three weeks on 23 April to approximately 15-16 May. Despite the textual extension, Israeli operations had pushed beyond the 10-kilometre buffer zone, and Hezbollah continued drone and ground activity. His death occurred in the zone that the Ceasefire was nominally protecting, illustrating the gap between the written text and the operational reality on the ground.

Hezbollah claimed the drone strike as retaliation for Israeli Ceasefire violations, which it said numbered more than 500 across sea, land, and air. Neither side formally voided the Ceasefire text; both continued to operate inside it. Fooks's death is one of the first confirmed Israeli soldier fatalities in southern Lebanon since the Iran war began on 28 February 2026.
