Iron Duke's own service ended on 13 July 2026, closing out a Type 23 general-purpose frigate's career built around anti-submarine warfare, patrol and escort work under the Duke-class design that has backboned the fleet since the 1990s. Newer designs had already thinned the class hull by hull; Iron Duke's paying-off was simply the next name on that list.

Iron Duke Left service alongside sister frigate HMS Richmond and the Hunt-class minehunter HMS Chiddingfold, the first crewed minehunter withdrawn since Britain named its uncrewed replacement classes .

That pairing makes Iron Duke's exit a marker of a wider transition rather than an isolated decommissioning: crewed general-purpose and mine-warfare hulls are leaving service faster than they are being replaced hull-for-hull, with autonomous and uncrewed systems absorbing part of the workload instead.
