Why would a Ukrainian defence firm build in the EU?
Background
Build with Ukraine is the framework under which Ukrainian defence manufacturers relocate production to allied bases abroad, and on 9 July it became the route Trinity Robotics is pursuing for a French joint venture to build its Konyk One uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV).
Trinity co-founder Oleksii Konik confirmed the firm is in talks with an unnamed French producer for a joint venture under the programme, after doubling its 2026 Konyk One production plan from about 1,100 to about 2,200 units. The move would be the first concrete sign of Ukrainian UGV manufacturing migrating to a NATO-Europe production node rather than staying inside Ukraine or moving as a pure export deal.
For European defence primes, a Build with Ukraine relocation is a different competitive threat to a straightforward import: a battle-proven Ukrainian maker building inside the European Union can qualify for EU defence procurement while undercutting domestic UGV suppliers on combat pedigree. Private capital backing firms like Trinity signals investors treating Ukrainian battlefield validation as a European market-entry strategy rather than wartime charity.
