Background

Torres came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 106th minute of extra time as Spain beat Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium on 19 July 2026, taking the World Cup. Argentina had no shot on target until extra time and finished the match with ten men; Spain had already taken twenty shots to Argentina's two.

It was his second match-defining contribution from the bench in the tournament: on 6 July, also as a substitute, he teed up Mikel Merino's 91st-minute winner against Portugal in Houston, the goal that ended Cristiano Ronaldo's international career at 41.

His final-day strike was later counted among the tournament's audited goal total of 308 across 104 matches, reported by Sky Sports on 20 July. Transfermarkt raised his valuation to a career-high €55m in its 22 July post-tournament reassessment, up from €50m.
