The UK Biological Security Strategy's 14 July implementation report allocated GBP 580m to Dstl Porton Down as part of a GBP 1.83bn network of national biosecurity centres, alongside GBP 1bn at Weybridge and GBP 250m at Harwell. The same report confirmed Exercise Pegasus, the largest pandemic-scenario exercise in UK history, ran during the reporting year.
Dstl Porton Down is the headquarters of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, an executive agency of the Ministry of Defence, near Salisbury in Wiltshire. Established in 1916 amid the First World War's chemical-weapons threat, it now works on detecting and countering chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazards, including pathogen sequencing and biosecurity research.
Porton Down's new funding sits within the same strategy that is also weighing whether to make DNA-synthesis screening statutory, part of a wider UK push to harden both physical biodefence infrastructure and the regulatory checks on synthetic biology.
