UK Startups and Innovation: EPSRC doubles AI-lab spend to £60mBackground
BOLD Lab was launched on 23 June 2026 alongside SOFAIR Lab as part of the £60m EPSRC national AI research programme. Led by the University of Oxford, BOLD Lab focuses on two linked research streams: novel learning algorithms that go beyond current gradient-descent and transformer paradigms, and embodied AI, the software that enables robots to act in physical environments. The lab is explicitly positioned as a pipeline for UK robotics spinouts.
BOLD Lab received roughly £8m in initial funding, plus £2m for at least ten doctoral students. Continued funding is contingent on an autumn 2026 review of both labs. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan announced the launch alongside SOFAIR Lab.
Oxford already hosts several published quantum and AI spinouts. BOLD Lab's embodied AI REMIT is complementary to that ecosystem, pointing toward long-cycle industrial robotics research rather than near-term software deployment.
