Background

BOLD Lab was launched on 23 June 2026 alongside SOFAIR Lab as part of the £60m EPSRC national AI research programme. Led by the University of Oxford, BOLD Lab focuses on two linked research streams: novel learning algorithms that go beyond current gradient-descent and transformer paradigms, and embodied AI, the software that enables robots to act in physical environments. The lab is explicitly positioned as a pipeline for UK robotics spinouts.

BOLD Lab received roughly £8m in initial funding, plus £2m for at least ten doctoral students. Continued funding is contingent on an autumn 2026 review of both labs. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan announced the launch alongside SOFAIR Lab.

Oxford already hosts several published quantum and AI spinouts. BOLD Lab's embodied AI REMIT is complementary to that ecosystem, pointing toward long-cycle industrial robotics research rather than near-term software deployment.

Common Questions
What is BOLD Lab at Oxford working on?
BOLD Lab focuses on new learning algorithms and embodied AI, the software that allows robots to operate in physical environments. It is intended to seed a UK robotics spinout pipeline.Source: event
What is embodied AI and why does the UK want to fund it?
Embodied AI is software that enables robots and autonomous systems to sense and act in the physical world. The UK Government is funding BOLD Lab at Oxford to develop this capability and create a domestic robotics spinout ecosystem.Source: event
How are BOLD Lab and SOFAIR Lab different from each other?
SOFAIR Lab at UCL focuses on open-source AI that runs on commodity hardware. BOLD Lab at Oxford focuses on new learning algorithms and embodied AI for robotics. Both are EPSRC-funded from the same £60m programme.Source: event
