The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council invested £10m across 21 new Fellows on 18 June 2026. The cohort spans engineering biology, neuroscience, plant Science and immunology and reaches at least six institutions outside London. Among them, Rafael Moreno Tortolero at Bristol is decoding how spiders secrete silk, pointing toward scalable biomaterials, while Pierce Mullen at St Andrews is pursuing neuro-inspired energy efficiency in AI.

BBSRC is one of UKRI's nine constituent research councils, funding bioscience research spanning agriculture, food, industrial biotechnology and fundamental biology at UK universities and institutes such as Rothamsted Research and the Roslin Institute. Fellowship schemes like this one back early-career researchers directly, rather than funding specific projects, to build long-term capacity in strategically important Science.

The cohort's deliberate reach outside London and the Golden Triangle universities feeds directly into the regional shift the British Business Bank's 2026 Small Business Equity Tracker later recorded: London's share of UK equity investment fell from 60% to 57% in 2025 while the North West, Scotland and the South West all grew. BBSRC's public research investment builds the underlying regional Science base years before it shows up in any single year's funding figures.
