Background
The B-2 Spirit is the US Air Force's flying-wing stealth bomber, operated exclusively from Whiteman AFB, Missouri by the 509th Bomb Wing. Only 20 aircraft exist, making each sortie a strategic-level decision. CENTCOM confirmed B-2s flew missions against Iran's hardened underground missile facilities early in the conflict.
The B-2 is the only platform capable of carrying the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a 30,000-pound bunker buster designed to reach deeply buried targets. During the Iran campaign, B-2s struck buried Ballistic missile launchers, Natanz nuclear infrastructure, and ammunition storage with GBU-31 2,000-pound penetrating bombs. Whether the MOP was actually employed became a persistent question; analysts noted some targets survived despite repeated strikes.
Each B-2 mission from Whiteman to Iran and back is a 30+ hour round trip requiring multiple aerial refuellings. The aircraft's stealth profile allows penetration of defended airspace that would be denied to non-stealth bombers.
