Background
Azzedine Ounahi is a Moroccan central midfielder Born on 19 April 2000 in Casablanca. He came through Raja Casablanca's academy before moving to France, joining Strasbourg's academy in 2018 and then Avranches in 2020. A breakout 2021-22 season at Angers, where he signed in July 2021, earned him a place in Morocco's 2022 World Cup squad, where his display against Spain drew wide praise. Marseille signed him for around €8m in January 2023, but limited playing time led to a loan at Greek club Panathinaikos in September 2024, where he won Player of the Season. He joined Girona FC permanently in August 2025 for around €6m, on a contract to 2030.
Ounahi scored twice as Morocco eliminated co-host Canada 3-0 in Houston in the World Cup round of 16 on 4 July 2026, converting a rebound in the 50th minute from an Achraf Hakimi cutback before adding a second in the 82nd. The brace extended a Morocco run that began with a 1-1 draw against Brazil and continued through a penalty shoot-out win over the Netherlands, and set up a quarter-final against France in Boston on 9 July, a rematch of the 2022 semi-final France won 2-0.
