Background
Antonio Rudiger (Born 3 March 1993 in Berlin) is a German centre-back of German-Sierra Leonean descent who has established himself as one of the most physically formidable defenders in Europe over a decade at elite level. Raised in Berlin, he came through the VfB Stuttgart academy before breaking into professional football, moving to Roma in 2015 and then to Chelsea in 2017 for an estimated £27 million. At Stamford Bridge he won the FA Cup (2018), the UEFA Europa League (2019), and most significantly the UEFA Champions League in 2021. In 2022 he joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, winning the Copa del Rey (2023), La Liga (2024), and a second Champions League title (2024). In June 2026 he signed a contract extension with Real Madrid until 2027. A powerful, aggressive ball-winner with exceptional pace for a centre-back, Rudiger is equally effective as an aerial presence and as a last-ditch tackler. He has represented Germany at three FIFA World Cups (2018, 2022, 2026) and two UEFA European Championships (2020 and 2024), accumulating more than 70 senior international caps. He was named in Germany's 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the host nation carries substantial expectations. Rudiger's career arc from Berlin streets to Champions League winner twice over is a significant story in German sport. Of Sierra Leonean heritage through his mother, he chose to represent Germany internationally despite being eligible for Sierra Leone. His physicality, vocal leadership, and willingness to play through discomfort have made him a trusted pillar of both Real Madrid's and Germany's defensive structures.
