UK Local Elections 2026: Lib Dem Amjid Ali takes over LutonBackground
Amjid Ali is the Liberal Democrat leader of Luton Borough Council and councillor for Barnfield ward. He chairs the council's executive at the head of a Coalition-run authority. The local Liberal Democrat Party calls him Luton's first council leader of Kashmiri heritage.
He took over after councillors removed Labour leader Tahmina Saleem, WHO had led the council since May 2026, in a vote of no confidence. The Liberal Democrats, the Independent Alliance and the Conservatives backed the motion at a full council meeting on 3 September.
The change ended Labour's run in charge of Luton, which it had led since 2007. Departures from the Labour group during the summer had already cost the party its majority, and the leadership changed mid-term without an election.
