Sued DHS for the records behind the 250,000 claim
US Midterms 2026: Watchdog sues DHS over Mullin's 250,000Background
American Oversight is a non-partisan, non-profit watchdog in the United States that investigates government chiefly through public-records requests and Freedom of Information Act lawsuits. It launched in March 2017.
Its 2026 election work centres on the evidence for federal voter-fraud claims. Mullin said on 17 July that DHS had found 250,000 non-citizens on the rolls in states including California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania. American Oversight says DHS acknowledged its records requests on 31 August but released nothing, and that the figure rested on commercial databases. It filed suit on 30 September, a day after Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington brought a similar case.
The group's method is to force the underlying documents into the open rather than argue the policy. Its suit tests whether a headline figure used to justify voter-roll checks can survive disclosure of the data behind it.
