Background

The European Commission named Amazon MGM among the studios providing sufficient competitive constraint in the European Economic Area when it approved Paramount Skydance's $110bn acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on 22 July 2026, alongside Disney, NBCUniversal, Sony, A24, Lionsgate and European studios. The approval was conditioned on Paramount divesting its stake in the Universal International Pictures European distribution joint venture and agreeing not to sign a Universal film-distribution deal in Europe for ten years.

Amazon MGM is Amazon's film and television studio, formed from Amazon's 2022 acquisition of the historic MGM library and production operation. Its inclusion in the Commission's competitive-landscape assessment is the only role it has played in this topic so FAR; it is not itself a party to the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery deal.
