Background

AI Economic Indicators is a continuously updated public dashboard platform from Stanford's Digital Economy Lab tracking AI's labour-market impact. It launched on 10 June 2026, replacing the lab's prior one-off working papers with three live components: the Canaries Dashboard, built with ADP Research on anonymised payroll data to flag early shifts in AI-exposed occupations; the Takeoff Tracker, measuring productivity and investment signals of a broader AI-driven economic shift; and the Adoption Monitor, tracking how fast firms and workers actually adopt AI tools .

The lab describes the platform as a growing resource rather than a one-off report, with further dashboards and datasets planned. It sits alongside a wave of 2026 data efforts, including employer-side AI-linked job-cut disclosures, attempting to give employers, workers and policymakers a live, data-based answer to whether recent job cuts trace to genuine automation or to cost-cutting dressed up as AI.

On 13 July 2026, the lab's director organised "We Must Act Now", a statement signed by more than 200 economists including 16 Nobel laureates warning that governments may have only a few years to adapt to AI .
