The A400M Parallel Mission System (PMS) is a modular, roll-on/roll-off upgrade package that converts France's A400M Atlas strategic transport into an airborne ISR collection and multi-domain command-and-control node. On 16 June 2026 Airbus Defence and Space signed a contract with OCCAR acting on behalf of France's DGA to develop and initially integrate a permanent core computer, removable operator workstations, and an electro-optical sensor. France plans to modify 20 aircraft, with installation in 2027 and flight testing in 2028. The system enables mission crews to Conduct ISR collection and coordinate multi-domain operations involving ground forces, helicopters, and fighter aircraft. The DGA has stated the PMS is eventually designed to manage drones, bombs, and missiles launched from the cargo hold, though that weapons-management capability is not in the current contract scope.
The A400M Atlas is a four-turboprop military transport operated by eight NATO and partner air forces: France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg, Turkey, and Malaysia. OCCAR manages the joint programme. The PMS contract creates a decision point for all other operators: a roll-on ISR and C2 kit that is compatible with the same airframe and integrated through the same OCCAR procurement vehicle is available as a near-term upgrade without a separate design baseline.
The significance of the PMS contract lies in what it does to the A400M's mission profile. A transport aircraft that can simultaneously collect ISR, distribute data to ground formations, and eventually serve as a drone mothership represents a structural expansion of the platform's value within NATO force structure. France chose this upgrade PATH over acquiring dedicated ISR platforms, reflecting broader European pressure to extract multi-role utility from existing fleets rather than fund new-start acquisitions.
