A US service member was killed and another wounded in northern Iraq on 19 July during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone, CENTCOM (US Central Command) said through Army Times and ABC News 1 2. The soldier died clearing wreckage, not under fire.
A one-way attack drone flies a single mission and detonates on arrival. The ones air defences bring down short of a target tend to land largely intact, warhead included, on ground that somebody then has to clear. Explosive ordnance disposal teams do that work in the days after each wave, and it is what killed him.
American losses in this war have been counted mostly in what got through. Three service members were killed and five seriously wounded on 1 March , two more died overnight the following day , and by 5 March the toll had reached eight, one of them a National Guard soldier who died of a health-related incident in Kuwait rather than under fire . This death shifts part of the ledger onto interceptions that worked, which is a cost no air defence statistic captures.
Cumulative US military deaths now stand at 17 by the count carried in Associated Press-sourced reporting and 18 per Military Times 3 4. The gap most likely turns on whether the service member missing in Jordan is folded in before identification completes. No names have been released for any of the fallen, held back under the 24-hour next-of-kin rule.
