Key takeaway

Fujairah gasoline hit a record low as diesel refilled, inverting the hub's product mix in one week.

Fujairah light distillates fell 14% to 1.203 million barrels in the week ended 29 June, the lowest on record, S&P Global reported. Light distillates are gasoline and naphtha, and they drained to an all-time floor in the same Fujairah tanks, in the same week, that saw fuel oil and diesel refill. 1

The split inverts the hub's product mix, which had tilted toward fuel oil after the hub turned into a net exporter of it in mid-June . Total Fujairah stocks remain about 61% below pre-war levels even after the week's rebuild, so the refill sits on a deep hole rather than a glut. A hub filling diesel while its gasoline drains points a refiner at diesel and jet, not the light end.

That divergence showed on the US screen the same week, where gasoline drew as distillate built. One hub, splitting in two directions, previews the inter-product trade the rest of the barrel is setting up.

Deep Analysis

In plain English

Light distillates are products like naphtha, used to make plastics, and light gasoline-blending components. Stocks of these at Fujairah, the UAE storage hub, fell to their lowest level ever recorded. At the very same time, heavier fuel oil stocks at the same hub jumped. Normally, storage levels of different fuel types move together; here they moved in opposite directions, suggesting oil is being sorted and shipped to wherever it is needed most, rather than simply building up or draining as a whole.

What could happen next?
  • Risk

A sustained light-distillate shortage at Fujairah could tighten East-of-Suez gasoline blending supply just as the region enters peak summer demand.
