Background
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is the US trade union representing film, television, news, and digital media writers, comprising WGA West and WGA East. Together they represent approximately 11,000 active members. The WGA was founded in its modern form in 1954 and has negotiated contracts with the major studios via the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for decades, including the landmark 2007-2008 strike over digital residuals.
In 2023, the WGA conducted a 148-day strike — one of the longest in its history — over streaming residuals, minimum staffing, and AI protections. That strike, combined with the SAG-AFTRA strike, effectively shut down Hollywood for most of the year. The 2023 settlement included provisions requiring studios to disclose AI use but stopped short of banning it. On 4 April 2026, the WGA reached a tentative four-year deal with AMPTP that resolved a $122 million health fund shortfall with a $321 million studio contribution, increased streaming residuals, and required studios to notify the WGA when licensing writers' work for AI training. The deal explicitly did not require studios to pay writers when their work is used for AI training — the union secured notification rights but not compensation rights.
The WGA's 2026 settlement is being read in two ways: as a pragmatic win that secures the health fund and boosts residuals, or as a capitulation on the central AI principle. The contrast with SAG-AFTRA's harder line on the Tilly Tax has sharpened the distinction between the two unions' negotiating strategies.
