Background

WB Group, founded in 1997 and based in Ożarów Mazowiecki near Warsaw, ranks as Poland's second-largest arms maker after PGZ. It remains privately owned, although the state-run Polish Development Fund bought a 24 per cent stake in 2017.

Its range covers reconnaissance, strike and communications. FlyEye drones find targets, Warmate loitering munitions and the Gladius strike system attack them, and FONET battlefield communications link the units together. That breadth lets WB Group offer a whole drone strike chain rather than a single aircraft.

The Canadian pact gives the group a route to a NATO customer outside Europe. Ottawa had earlier planned to use the EU's SAFE loan instrument as a third country, and its September deal with Warsaw builds on that plan.
