The company builds foundation models for biomanufacturing applications, including its CANOPY platform, which applies AI to optimise biological manufacturing processes at scale.

Biomanufacturing — using living systems to produce materials, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food — is a strategic priority for both the UK and EU, intersecting with synthetic biology, fermentation technology, and sustainable materials. Foundation models trained on process data, strain performance, and fermentation conditions can dramatically reduce the empirical trial-and-error cycles that currently make biomanufacturing expensive and slow to scale.

Twig Bio's selection alongside Prima Mente (neuroscience) signals that the Sovereign AI portfolio is prioritising sectors where UK academic and industrial strength intersects with high compute requirements: areas where GPU access from Isambard-AI creates a genuine capability advantage that commercial cloud pricing would otherwise foreclose .
