Background
Telefónica Tech UK&I is the UK and Ireland enterprise-technology division of Telefónica Tech, the business and digital-services Arm of Spanish telecoms group Telefónica. It is one of the thirteen companies named in Cosine's Lumen Sovereign Coalition, unveiled at London Tech Week on 8 June 2026 as the backbone of what Cosine calls Britain's first sovereign frontier AI model. Its specific workstream within the Coalition has not been disclosed publicly.
The UK and Ireland operation was created in July 2021 when Telefónica Tech acquired the UK and Ireland business of German IT group CANCOM for around €398m. That deal gave Telefónica a substantial managed-services and cloud footprint in Britain overnight. The division now spans cybersecurity, cloud, data and artificial intelligence, Microsoft Dynamics 365 implementation, and digital-workplace services.
Its cybersecurity capability is anchored by the NextDefense platform and a security operations centre in Belfast. The UK and Ireland business employs around 1,000 people and has been led since August 2025 by chief executive Martyn Bullerwell, who founded the data consultancy Adatis. The Coalition listing places it among the regulated-industry suppliers betting on UK sovereign AI as an enterprise market.
