REGO is a Guarantee of Origin certificate for Australian electricity, not an instrument written for data centres alone. Each certificate corresponds to one megawatt-hour of renewable generation and carries the identity of the generator and the exact date and time of production, issued under the Future Made in Australia (Guarantee of Origin) Act 2024 and administered by the Clean Energy Regulator.
A design put to federal and state energy ministers on 5 August 2026 would require data centres specifically to surrender REGO certificates sourced only from new renewable generators, matched to broad peak and off-peak periods rather than the hour of consumption, and reconciled once a year rather than in real time . Certificates need not come from the same state as the load; that looseness sits in how the scheme would be applied to large consumers, not in what the certificate itself records about a generator.
