National Grid plc is the electricity transmission operator for England and Wales, moving bulk power from generators to regional distribution networks over the high-voltage network it owns and maintains. It also runs the Electricity National Control Centre, balancing supply and demand in real time, and separately operates the UK's gas transmission system.
The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and regulated by Ofgem, which sets the revenues it can earn on its regulated assets. National Grid is distinct from NESO, the government-owned system operator that plans the wider energy system and manages the connection queue; National Grid is the asset owner building and running the wires that any queue reform ultimately depends on.
Because new transmission infrastructure sits on multi-year to decade-long planning and construction horizons, National Grid's build capacity is the physical constraint underneath every policy conversation about grid-connection reform, however fast Ofgem or NESO move on paper.
National Grid's build times outpace demand
National Grid, not Ofgem or NESO, is the party actually pouring concrete and stringing cable. By 27 February 2026 the data-centre sub-queue alone, roughly 50 GW, exceeded the entire national peak of 45 GW, and Ofgem's three reform workstreams do nothing to shorten the physical build time for new sub-stations and overhead lines that National Grid must deliver.
The same physical ceiling shows up beyond Britain: Texas operator ERCOT told lawmakers on 9 April that large power transformers, the same class of equipment National Grid depends on, take up to four years to deliver, so most new load cannot be powered before 2028 even where connection offers are approved today.
