The Ministry of Digital Development and Information is Singapore’s ministry for digital policy, public communications and information regulation. Its REMIT covers digital infrastructure, media regulation and public engagement on technology issues.
The Ministry oversees statutory boards that put this policy into practice, including the Infocomm Media Development Authority. That relationship connects ministerial direction with regulatory delivery across Singapore’s digital and communications sectors.
Its continuing relevance lies in setting the policy framework for a city-state whose public services, economy and information environment depend heavily on digital systems. On 8 September, its Digital Infrastructure Bill showed how that REMIT can translate into enforceable infrastructure rules.
Ministry tables digital infrastructure bill
On 8 September, the Ministry of Digital Development and Information tabled the Digital Infrastructure Bill for its first reading. The proposal would move data-centre security, resilience and energy efficiency from voluntary standards into a licensing system.
The bill gives the Ministry’s policy REMIT a direct role in setting the conditions under which major digital infrastructure operates in Singapore. The Infocomm Media Development Authority would enforce both licences, linking ministerial policy with the regulator’s oversight of affected providers.
