Background
Maher Saba is Meta's VP of Monetisation Infrastructure and head of Applied AI Engineering. On 14 April 2026 he authored an internal memo announcing the elimination of approximately 8,000 engineering roles (10% of Meta's engineering workforce) and the replacement of traditional engineering job titles with three new categories: AI builder, AI pod lead, and AI org lead. The memo, first reported externally on 19 April, framed the cuts as a deliberate move to reorganise Meta around an AI-native operating model rather than a conventional cost reduction.
Saba has been a senior figure in Meta's infrastructure and monetisation engineering leadership. Before his current role heading Applied AI Engineering, he held roles in Meta's ads and payments infrastructure, overseeing the systems that underpin the company's core revenue engine. His appointment to lead the AI-native restructuring reflects Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's decision to delegate the engineering transformation to a trusted internal operator rather than an outside hire.
The memo places Saba at the centre of the most consequential restructuring in Meta's history since the 2022 Year of Efficiency cuts. His framing of the job-title overhaul as an engineering culture shift, rather than a layoff, has been widely scrutinised as an attempt to redefine what 'software engineer' means inside a frontier AI company.
