Pandemics and BiosecurityBackground
Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia, and the district hardest hit in the Cholera outbreak the government declared on 30 September 2026. Acting Health Minister Gilbert Siame said Lusaka had recorded 130 of the 304 suspected cases to 29 September, 39 of them laboratory-confirmed, and four deaths, Zambia Monitor reported. The first case, confirmed on 13 August, was a patient from Chibombo admitted to Apollo Mini Hospital in Lusaka, according to News Diggers.
The city has carried Zambia's heaviest Cholera loads before. The 2023-24 national outbreak recorded 19,840 cases and 685 deaths by 22 February 2024. Authorities turned the 60,000-seat National Heroes Stadium into a Cholera treatment centre, delayed school reopening and began oral vaccination on 16 January 2024.
Lusaka also holds a model for stopping the disease. In early 2018 Zambia ran a city-wide oral vaccine campaign there alongside water chlorination and a ban on street food, and declared that outbreak over within months. The new outbreak follows a WHO report of 7,870 Cholera deaths worldwide in 2025, the most reported since 1999, even though annual vaccine production had climbed to some 80 million doses from about 30 million.
