A federal judge let a private-nuisance suit against Amazon's Louisa County data-centre construction site survive a motion to dismiss in a 10 July 2026 ruling, surfaced in reporting on 23 July. Separately, Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality has been weighing Amazon's application to discharge 280,000 gallons a day of cooling water into Sedges Creek, which feeds Lake Anna; a June 2026 public hearing drew objections and produced no permit decision, and the draft permit still carries no PFAS testing requirement.
Louisa County is a rural Virginia county roughly 30 miles east of Charlottesville, adjacent to the North Anna Nuclear Power Station. Amazon Web Services has built its Lake Anna Tech Campus there as part of a $35 billion Virginia investment programme, drawing on the plant's power and the lake's water for cooling.
The county sits at the centre of two parallel disputes, over water-discharge permitting and over construction nuisance, that have become an early test case for how residents near AWS's Virginia campuses can contest the industry's environmental footprint in court and before regulators.
