On Monday 3 August 2026 the city commission voted 4-3 to pass a one-year moratorium on new large electrical users with projected peak demand of 50 MW or more, following weeks of public hearings driven by opposition to the proposed Project Swan data-centre facility . The three dissenting commissioners argued the moratorium's language was too broad and would catch smaller expansions alongside hyperscale projects.
The close vote leaves the moratorium's scope contested even as it takes effect, with the dissenting bloc having signalled it expects the wording to be revisited.
