Background
Johny Placide was Born on 29 January 1988 in Montfermeil, Seine-Saint-Denis, France, to Haitian parents, and holds dual French and Haitian nationality. He committed to Haiti internationally after representing France at under-21 level (7 caps, 2008-09). A 1.81 m goalkeeper, Placide built his career in French football: he spent formative years at Le Havre (2007-2012, 97 league appearances), then Stade de Reims (2013-2016, 49 appearances), and most recently SC Bastia in Ligue 2, where he spent five seasons from July 2021 and made 139 league appearances. He announced his departure from Bastia on 13 May 2026 ahead of the contract expiry on 30 June 2026 and entered the 2026 World Cup as a free agent.
At over 80 caps, Placide is one of Haiti's most-capped players and their long-serving captain. He was the decisive figure in Haiti's qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the country's first appearance since Germany 1974: a 52-year absence. All qualifying matches were played away from Haiti due to gang violence making home fixtures impossible. In the decisive match on 14 November 2025 against Costa Rica in Curacao, Placide made six saves and kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win that confirmed qualification.
At the 2026 World Cup, Haiti drew Group C against Scotland on 13 June at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Scotland won 1-0, but the goal came from a John McGinn follow-up after Placide's own save on a Che Adams shot in the 28th minute. No errors were attributed to him.
