Janes

Janes (formally Janes Information Services) is a British open-source intelligence company founded in 1898 by naval artist and writer Fred T. Jane, who began sketching warships at Portsmouth before producing the first edition of Jane's Fighting Ships. It has since expanded into a comprehensive publisher covering military equipment, national security, aerospace and transport across dozens of titles and databases.

Based in Greater London, Janes passed through ownership by the Thomson Corporation and IHS Markit before becoming independent in December 2019 under Montagu Private Equity. Its business today centres on subscription data services: governments, militaries, intelligence agencies and defence contractors pay for continuously updated platforms covering order-of-battle, procurement intelligence, equipment specifications and threat assessments. In 2022 Janes acquired Avascent's defence-market analytics business, broadening into acquisition strategy and industrial-base analysis.
