Background
Halkidiki (also spelled Chalkidiki) is a three-pronged peninsula in northern Greece, a major summer beach resort area for both domestic Greek holidaymakers and international visitors. It is the fourth destination named for potential STR cap extension under Law 5275/2026, alongside Santorini, Paros and Chania. No formal cap decision had been published as of 8 May 2026.
Halkidiki's proximity to Thessaloniki — already under the new STR suspension — makes it a natural candidate for extension: domestic demand from Thessaloniki residents and a significant summer nomad influx produced high STR density in the peninsula's resort communities during 2022-2025. The third prong of the peninsula, Mount Athos, is a monastic community closed to general tourism, which limits that portion from any STR discussion.
