Background
Guerrero, on Mexico's Pacific coast, became a flashpoint during the 2026 World Cup on 8 July when cartel group La Nueva Familia Michoacana attacked the rural community of Guajes de Ayala with drones, exposing gaps Left by the state's shift of security resources to host cities.
The state's capital is Chilpancingo, and its best-known city is the resort of Acapulco; population is estimated at around 3.3 million. Guerrero has long been one of Mexico's most cartel-contested states, with groups including the Jalisco Cartel New Generation, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, Los Ardillos and Los Tlacos fighting for territory and influence over local law enforcement, alongside a tourism economy that remains central to the state's income.
The drone attack on Guajes de Ayala highlighted a wider pattern: an estimated 100,000 military and National Guard personnel were redeployed to World Cup host cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, leaving non-host states like Guerrero with thinner coverage against entrenched cartel violence.
