Closed a GBP10 million Series A to commercialise manganese flow batteries
UK Startups and Innovation: Two spinouts close on British moneyBackground
Certain Energy is an Imperial College London energy-storage spinout developing manganese-based redox flow batteries for long-duration grid storage. The company was created in 2017 as RFC Power (Companies House no. 10838031) to commercialise research from Professor Anthony Kucernak in Imperial's Department of Chemistry and Professor Nigel Brandon in its Department of Earth Science and Engineering. It is based at the I-HUB on Imperial's White City campus.
On 26 August 2026 it closed a £10m Series A, including £3.5m from the British Business Bank, rebranding from RFC Power to Certain Energy.
Because the manganese flow batteries can extend discharge duration by enlarging their electrolyte tanks, cheaply moving storage from hours to days, Certain Energy addresses the UK grid's growing need for long-duration storage as more intermittent renewables come online, and is part of a wider wave of domestic-fund-backed university deep-tech spinouts.
