Shaun Evans, an Australian FIFA video assistant referee supervisor, became the centre of a major controversy at the 2026 World Cup after he was caught on broadcast cameras making what appeared to be an 'OK' hand gesture during Germany's 7-1 opening win over Curaçao. The gesture has been associated by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) with white supremacist signalling since 2019, though it also has an entirely innocent meaning in other contexts .

FIFA's Disciplinary Committee cleared Evans, accepting his explanation that the movement was an involuntary twitch. However, FIFA's own discrimination monitor, the Fare network, publicly called for his removal from the tournament, creating a split within FIFA's own institutional framework. One body exonerated him; another sought his dismissal.

Evans' role as a VAR supervisor, not a pitch referee, meant the controversy arose from broadcast coverage rather than any on-field decision. His case highlighted the particular scrutiny officials face in the age of television and social media at a tournament as large as the World Cup, where broadcast cameras cover not only the pitch but the officials' room.
