Background

InterRoC VII (Interoperable Robotic Convoy VII) is a German research programme, commissioned by defence procurement agency BAAINBw, developing highly automated convoy control for military logistics vehicles. The work centres on keeping mixed vehicle formations moving safely and autonomously together, including in GPS-denied or jammed environments, using onboard sensor fusion to map surroundings and hold position instead of relying on satellite navigation.

In July 2026, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles took over full responsibility for the programme. The current build runs on Rheinmetall's HX-family logistics trucks fitted with its modular PATH sensor kit and drive-by-wire kit, with Munich firm Driveblocks GmbH supplying the camera-and-LiDAR AI perception software.

Shortly before the handover, Rheinmetall took top ranking in the Convoy Scenarios category at the 2026 European Land Robot Trial (ELROB) at Thun, Switzerland.
