Reported WHO's position on the ring trial
Pandemics and Biosecurity: Mentioned in: WHO: 2,000 Congolese workers get ErveboBackground
Healio is a US medical news and education website for healthcare professionals. SLACK Incorporated launched it in April 2012. Its parent, the Wyanoke Group, is based in Thorofare, New Jersey. Healio publishes clinical news, journals and continuing medical education across more than 30 specialties.
Its infectious disease desk carried WHO's account of Ebola vaccination in DR Congo. On 10 September 2026 it reported WHO figures showing about 2,000 health and frontline workers had received Ervebo, which is licensed against Zaire ebolavirus, not the Bundibugyo species behind the outbreak. WHO told Healio that results on whether Ervebo protects against Bundibugyo "may take months".
Those doses came from 70,000 released to DR Congo in August. A randomised ring-vaccination trial was still planned for October or November, and MSF began a separate study of about 20,000 frontline workers on 19 September.
Healio relayed WHO's Ervebo figures
Healio's infectious disease desk reported on 10 September 2026 that about 2,000 health and frontline workers in DR Congo had received Ervebo, citing WHO. Merck's vaccine is licensed against Zaire ebolavirus, not the Bundibugyo species driving the 2026 outbreak.
WHO told Healio that results on Ervebo's protection against Bundibugyo 'may take months'. The doses came from 70,000 the International Coordinating Group released on 20 August, while WHO still expected its Phase 3 ring trial of 20,000 doses in October or November 2026.
