Background
The Giraffe 1X is a compact, deployable surveillance radar produced by Saab that provides 3D air-surveillance and threat location for ground-based air-defence and Counter-UAS systems. Operating in X-band, it delivers 360-degree coverage against fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft as well as small unmanned aerial systems at ranges sufficient for medium-altitude threat detection. It is designed for rapid deployment from a single vehicle, meeting the mobile C-UAS requirement that the Baltic drone environment demands.
The Giraffe 1X is the primary sensor in the GUTE II Counter-UAS package that Sweden's FMV awarded to Saab for SEK 2.6 billion in May 2026. It integrates with the Trackfire remote weapon station and electronic warfare effectors to form a complete mobile C-UAS battery. The radar is already in service with multiple NATO member states, providing a qualified interoperability baseline for Alliance-wide air-surveillance integration.
