Will the EUDI Wallet become the world's first state-backed digital identity platform at scale?
Background
The European Union Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet is a sovereign digital identity application that EU member states are required to offer to all citizens and residents by 2026 under the revised eIDAS 2.0 regulation. The wallet allows users to store and share verified credentials — including national ID, driving licence, professional qualifications, and payment details — across EU borders without relying on commercial platform identity systems. The EUDI Wallet is a centrepiece of Europe's digital sovereignty strategy, designed to reduce dependence on US Big Tech login infrastructure and give citizens control over their identity data within a European legal framework.
