Background

Daniel Taylor was the Reform UK councillor elected for Cliftonville ward on Kent County Council in May 2025. In March 2026 Taylor was convicted and jailed for controlling and coercive behaviour, a criminal offence under the Serious Crime Act 2015. His conviction vacated the Cliftonville ward seat.

The vacancy triggered a by-election held on 9 April 2026, which the Green Party won with a 26.7-point swing from Reform UK. The result reduced Reform's Kent County Council group from 57 seats (won at the May 2025 landslide) to 47 following a series of departures by resignation, expulsion and this defeat. Taylor's is one of a number of Reform UK councillor departures tracked nationally since the 2025 elections.
