Background

BAAINBw, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, is Germany's central defence procurement authority. Based in Koblenz and reporting to the Federal Ministry of Defence, it runs the full lifecycle of Bundeswehr materiel: development, testing, procurement and in-service support, covering everything from soldiers' personal kit to tanks, aircraft and complex weapon systems. It employs roughly 6,800 staff and in 2024 concluded over 12,000 procurement contracts worth nearly 60 billion euros.

The office was formed on 1 October 2012 by merging the Federal Office for Military Technology and Procurement (BWB, 1957) with the Federal Office for Information Management and Information Technology of the Bundeswehr (IT-AmtBw, 2002).

Its research portfolio extends into autonomy: it commissioned the InterRoC VII programme researching driverless military convoy operation, now led by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles.
